All consultations are personally conducted by Stuart J. Menn, M.D. He is a sleep medicine specialist with over 30 years of experience in the field of sleep medicine. Dr. Menn has board-certifications in internal medicine, pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders medicine. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine and a Founding Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. He has been the lead author on peer-review research in areas that range from oral appliances for the treatment of sleep apnea as well as the treatment of excessive sleepiness in traumatic brain injury.
Comprehensive sleep medicine is much more than doing a standard sleep study, whether it is in a sleep laboratory or a portable home study. Unfortunately, many patients have had sleep studies in the past and are no better for it today. Rather, comprehensive sleep medicine requires a good sleep history and physical exam, the correct customized study (if needed*), accurate interpretation and a therapeutic plan that understands all the problems treatment options.
Many sleep problems will not require overnight laboratory testing. Dr. Menn is able to effectively treat and improve the majority of chronic insomnia patients without the need for a sleep study and without adding a variety of hypnotic medications to their often lengthy list. In addition, Pacific Sleep Medicine has available methods to monitor sleep in the home setting, when appropriate with portable apnea studies, high quality oximetry and actigraphy.
A special problem for the referring physician is the patient with well diagnosed sleep apnea but still on no treatment at all because of non-compliance with CPAP. Today, there are now a variety of treatments that can, at the very least, improve sleep disordered breathing patterns. We are able to employ these strategies for your patients in a rational way, with improved outcomes.
For the convenience of those working people who find it difficult to make weekday appointments, Pacific Sleep Medicine now offers your patients the possibility for consultation on two Saturday mornings a month.
