Dr. Stuart Menn has gained a reputation in sleep disorders medicine for his dedicated and conscientious work, both as a clinician and as a researcher. As a Board Certified Sleep Specialist, Menn’s expertise spans a wide range of sleep disorders. As a Board Certified Internist and Boarded Pulmonologist, Stuart Menn focuses on how sleep disorders interact when more than one medical problem is present.

Stuart Menn has an impressive and extensive background. He received his B.A. at New York University (1960); his MD at New York University, School of Medicine (1964); served his Internship at University of Vermont School of Medicine, Burlington, VT (1965); and his Internal Medicine Residency, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine (1966). Menn also served as a Flight Surgeon and Scientist in the Environmental Systems Branch of the United States Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, San Antonio, Texas, (1966-1967), where his research supported the NASA Gemini and Apollo Space Missions.

Following that, Menn served his 2nd year of residency at the University of Vermont School of Medicine (1968); and a Fellowship in Intensive Respiratory Care, Harvard University School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesia (1969) at the Massachusetts General Hospital; a Fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine, University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine (1970-1972). Upon completion of his active duty service, Dr. Menn continued to serve in the United Air Force Reserve and retired as a Lt. Colonel, in 1990.

Menn began his professional career as the Medical Director, of the ICU at the University of California School of Medicine, VA Hospital, La Jolla, CA. (1973-1980). With a growing interest in sleep disorders, Stuart Menn was the Co-Founder of the Scripps Clinic Sleep Disorders Center, La Jolla, CA. (1982-1996). Dr. Menn left Scripps to become a Co-Founder and Medical Director of Pacific Sleep Medicine, San Diego (1996-2001). Since 2001, Dr. Menn has served as the Medical Director of Pacific Sleep Medicine, Palm Springs & Rancho Mirage Sleep Centers.

In 1984, Dr. Menn became the sixth pulmonologist in the USA to receive board certification in sleep medicine from the Association of Sleep Disorder Centers, the predecessor of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. In 2011, he became additionally boarded in sleep medicine under the auspices of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Menn has been a Member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine since 1978, serving on the Nosology Committee, of the AASM, and the Respiratory-Related Sleep Disorders Committee as well as a Member of the Accreditation Committee & the Sleep Exam Committee, AASM. Menn’s publications include, The International Classification of Sleep Disorders-Diagnostic and Coding Manual (1990) and Oral Appliances for the Treatment of Snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea: a Review (1995). He has also published research articles in the areas of chronic hypercapnia, metabolic alkalosis, restless leg syndrome, insomnia and dental devices in obstructive sleep apnea. In the area of clinical research, Stuart Menn has been the Principle Investigator on more than 50 clinical studies in insomnia, sleep apnea, shift work and restless leg syndrome. In 2010, Stuart Menn received the PIERRE ROBIN AWARD by the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine for “exceptional contributions to dental sleep medicine in education and research (2010). In 2012, he, as lead author, presented a paper at the annual meeting of the Association of Professional Sleep Societies on Armodafinil for the Treatment of Excessive Sleepiness Associated with Mild or Moderate Closed Traumatic Brain Injury.
